Research Interests
Hi, my name is Jay Hosler and I am originally from Huntington Indiana.  I recieved by B.A. in Biology from DePauw University in 1989. From there I moved onto a Ph.D. program at the University of Notre Dame to work in the lab of Harald Esch.  While there, my work focused on the effect of temperature on insect flight muscles functional.  Notre Dame was also where I met my wife, Lisa.  Much of my graduate work was presented in Cambridge England  at the 4th International Congress for Neuroethology in 1995.  It was at this meeting that I met Brian Smith and decided to take a postdoctoral position in his lab.  I have recently relieved a National Research Service Award from NIH to fund my research for the next three years.  My work focuses on how the learning phenomenon known as "blocking" is set-up in the antennal lobe of the honey bee.  To this end I am employing 1) behavioral tests utilizing Proboscis Extension Conditioning and 2) intracellular recordings from projection neurons in the honey bee antennal lobe.
