JPEG Image Help

All of the photos of adult moths and genitalia in these web pages are in JPEG format. A JPEG is a compressed graphic, which allows high quality images to be stored in a minimum amount of space. All the JPEGs in this report are in 200 dpi and 16 million (true) colors, yet one image takes up only 50 or 100 K of disk space. There have been a few requests to put the images in GIF format, but this is not practical, since GIFs allow only 256 colors and take up at least twice the disk space. If you cannont view the in-line images and would like to, please see below for help on the platform you are operating under.

Windows

If you are operating under MS Windows, I highly recommend using Netscape as your web browser. Netscape can view in-line JPEGs, as well as GIFs, and is the program I currently use, and used to test and develop these pages. You may download a current version of Netscape from:

ftp.netscape.com

If you would like to download the images and view them later, a number of shareware JPEG viewers for windows are avaliable at:

ftp.cdrom.com /pub/simtel/win3/graphics

wqv12d.zip 269936K View & convert for JPEG/BMP/GIF/TIFF/CD-PHOTO

winjp265.zip 340207K BMP/GIF/IFF/JPG/PCX/PPM/TGA/TIF viewer/conv

winecj12.zip 45084K WinECJ v1.2: Fast JPEG viewer for Windows

vuepri33.zip 218419K VuePrint - Fast JPEG/GIF Viewer for Windows

UNIX

If you are using a version of Unix, I highly recommend using Netscape as your web browser. The current version is downloadable from a number of the major Unix/Linux ftp sites. If you would like to view the JPEGs externally, I highly recommend using XV or a similar graphics program that will support JPEG compression.

DOS

If you are using a version of DOS, I recommend downloading a version of DVPEG from ftp.cdrom.com or some other Simtel ftp site. This program supports JPEG compression and will allow you to view images once downloaded on most DOS machines.

If you are still having problems, or would like help on finding an appropriate web browser or JPEG viewer, please do not hesitate to contact me at gilligan.5@osu.edu.
